Knife Build #30

I ordered this Hock Paring Knife Kit from Hock Tools.

The 3.5 inch paring knife kit consists of a wonderful Hock blade and the necessary pins. The kit is Model #KP350.

This knife is for David.  As I was working with the wood, David passed away.

In his memory, I gave this knife to Brad

It will have handle scales of boxelder maple (acer negundo}.

For the most part, all of the steps in this process are identical to the first knife.

This boxelder wood was totally new to me...it is extremely colorful...in this pic, we are at Yazoo, Brad and David are cutting out a burl that has the vivid colors...

This is the burl remaining in the dead fall tree after the saw off...
I sawed the burl at the band saw...

here is a cross section showing the interesting coloration...there were a number of worm holes.

I band sawed a blank...ran it through the drum sander.

Then resawed the blank at the bandsaw and drum sanded again.
I had hoped to be able to make the scales avoiding the worm holes but that was not possible...just too many holes.

Epoxied the blanks to the tang.

After the RX90 sanding sequence  (80x, 150x, 220x, 320x, to 400x).

An interesting serpentine figuring across the tang...

It was at this stage that David passed...all work on this piece stopped.

Wet sanding was performed on saturation coats of my shop mixed wiping varnish...sequence was 400x, 600x, 800x, 1000x, 1500x.
Blade sharpening was performed with Wicked Edge.  Angle was reground at 19° with 100x through 1000x diamond stones. Then polished with 1200x-1600x ceramic stones.
Final polish .6 ? ceramic stone.

Finished knife.
