Step Stool

Asa and Silas, the blond Grands, wanted to make their mother a step stool for Mother's Day.

I designed the unit and then James and I milled the parts for a step stool that they could assemble.

I created a quick drawing in Sketchup..

elements were a stout top and legs with a stretcher to hold down racking...through tenons that will have wedges to lock...

The wood for the stool was southern yellow pine left over from the bench project...we milled down a couple of boards, jointed the edges and then put in Dominoes

We used 10 mm x 50 mm Dominoes...

image shown is the glue up...

Clamp down...this created a board roughly 11 inches wide...all parts were milled from this board

After cutting a 10 inch x 18 inch top, Domino mortises were put into the underside...

A fence was clamped down to guaranteee consistent mortise location...

Here are the milled legs, top and stretecher...Domino tenons were test fitted and all was well...
Through mortises were laid out...and most of the mortise was hogged out with a Forstner bit on drill press.

Walls of the mortises were squared and finished out with chisels...

Final squaring and corner cleanup was done with a Nishiki Kinari paring chisel...
Minor adjustments to the mortise were made with an Auriou rasp.

A little cleanup on the tenon shoulders with LV skew rabbit plane.

Bias cuts on the legs were made with track saw.

Milled leg..
Dry test fit...very stout even without glue...
Finished parts...ready for assembly by the Grands.
The glue up...
The stool after the clamps are removed...wedges to be trimmed.
Finished product in use.
